I'm back with another book review! This time I am reviewing the short story, "Hym and Hur" by Phillip Frey.
This is a story about an immortal couple, by the names of Hym and Hur (not hard to guess which is which!) This couple spends their time intervening in the lives of mortals, and doing so mostly unseen. They have the ability to be both visible and invisible, as the situation calls for. Between the two of them, they like to perform both pranks and good deeds...it is when they try to do both at the same time, that things get a little out of hand.
In this particular story, they make a deal with death, and give a mortal the ability to interfere with deaths ability to take a life. However, they quickly realize, that you simply cannot make deals with death, because he is tricky, and always wins. In addition to trying to get out of the contract that they made with death, the pair must also try to save the relationship of the one that is at the center of their "good deed"
As I mentioned, this is a very short story (29 pages), and at times it can be hard to keep track of what exactly is going on. I also felt as if the ending was very abrupt, and sort of odd...there was a part of me questioning whether or not this was truly meant to be the end.
Overall, it was a cute quick read, one with a a couple of lessons...your interpretation of the reading will determine what lessons you take away from this story.
